Home Original Monotype
Home is a large, hand-pulled monotype printed onto warm white Hahnemuhle watercolour paper, 300gsm. Rhonda used high quality Charbonnel Aqua Wash inks in prussian blue, veridian green and soft black and then rolled the mixes out separately; dark hues of blue/green/black were rolled onto the upper half of the printing plate and the darkest hues of blue/soft black were rolled onto the lower half. Rhonda then blended and pushed the ink between the two layers, which resulted in many beautiful effects; rich texture, varied tones and a subtle watery atmosphere. The image of the large, almost mermaid-like floating figure with the movement of whales coming into and out of the print frame gives the monoprint an overall effect of tranquility and stillness in great ocean depths where giant whales move slowly and sing loudly, so much so that their songs can be heard across all the oceans of the world by other whales.

Monotype "Home" is a new and very different print that Rhonda created as she began exploring her love of her Newfoundland heritage, growing up living on an isolated Island in the North Atlantic Ocean and the occupation she once held as a Biologist working with marine animals and conducting research offshore. Rhonda has always had a deep curiosity about life and she often reflects in child-like wonderment about the Earth, space, oceans, rivers, animals and all of nature. During her natural observations and reflections, she came to the realization that we are all connected by one important element, WATER. A deep love of the Ocean, along with her exploration of rivers, ponds and lakes all around Newfoundland sparked her desire to study the science of life, but especially marine life.
"Home" invites you to connect with the elements of Nature, with Her creatures, such as the whales, which is so easy to do as they are very peaceful, alturistic beings. Newfoundland people have a long heritage of working intimately with the natural whale migrations. Capelin is a rich food source for humpback whales migrating north, and the capelin fishery is tied closely to this natural phenonmenon.
"Home" is a reflection of Rhonda's natural ability to deeply connect to marine life and the oceans no matter where she calls home. She is always at home in or near the water and in connection with all animals and the natural world. It's from this latest work that Rhonda internalized the concept of "we are nature'. Nature and the natural, wild Earth IS who we are and we need to learn how to live in harmony with Nature rather than live so un-naturally, as we currently do. Our modern ways have polluted waterways and all the oceans around the world and this is unsustainable for Nature. Fortunately, Rhonda is very aware and would like to raise the awareness of other people about the natural world and how it always balances itself, with or without our assistance. We can choose to be part of the solution to our pollution or we can choose to be a victim of our own self-destructive ways. "Home" speaks about beauty and peace in our waters and of our life-receiving connection to it and all of Nature. Water is life. It is alive and it's the one element we can't live without. So we can no longer afford to wait for a hero or heroine in this world, it's you!
